Los Cabos Big Game Charter Boat Classic es el primer torneo de su tipo en México. No hay cuota de inscripción y está abierto a todos los aficionados a la pesca. Los Cabos tiene el récord de captura de atún, wahoo, dorado y marlín más grande del mundo, ofreciendo una posibilidad real de atraparlos en sus mares y agregar emoción a un día de pesca en barco.

Solo necesitas preparar la embarcación para disfrutar del fantástico clima de Los Cabos y su legendaria pesca. Debido al éxito durante el 2013, para el 2014 se extenderá a cuatro días de torneo.

Los Cabos Big Game Charter Boat Classic is the first of its kind in Mexico. There’s no entry fee and the tournament is open to all fans of fishing. Participants have the opportunity to catch record size tuna, wahoo, dorado and the world’s largest marlin. It is a unique event created to add excitement to a day of fishing.

You just need to charter a boat to enjoy the fantastic weather of Los Cabos and the legendary fishing. Due to the success of the 2013 event, this year the tournament will be extended to four days of fishing.

Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot el torneo de atún más grande del mundo. Inició en Cabo San Lucas en el año de 1999 con 12 embarcaciones. El concepto se planeó hace aproximadamente 18 años por Kit McNair, quien tenía experiencia como director de escuelas de pesca, acompañado de Pat McDonald quien es el director de Cabo Tuna Jackpot. Este año133 equipos participan del 5 al 8 de noviembre.

The Cabo Tuna Jackpot is the world's largest tuna tournament. Kit McNair came up with the idea about 18 years ago. He made Cabo San Lucas the headquarters used his experience as a director of fishing schools to develop the tournament. The year was 1999 and 12 boats were entered. This year 133 teams will ¨fish hard and party hard¨ from Nov 5-8 !!!

2014 Bisbee´s Black & Blue Tournament

As befitting the World’s Richest Fishing Tournament, the Bisbee’s Black & Blue, presented by IGY Marinas, did hand out a whopping $2 million dollars in cash prizes at the awards celebration Saturday night. But the real winners are a local orphanage for boys, as well as the citizens of Los Cabos. After Hurricane Odile slammed ashore last month and caused widespread damage, 125 teams heeded the call to fish anyway and came to town to help jump-start the vital economic recovery.

“In all honesty, up until a couple weeks ago I thought we were going to rally whoever was here at the Baja Cantina, throw some money in a hat and just go fishing to keep the tournament streak going,” said Tournament Director Wayne Bisbee. “But thanks to all our fantastic anglers and sponsors, somehow we pulled it off and the results are just insane. We helped put a lot of people back to work, caught some good fish and we’re definitely leaving Cabo in better shape than we found it.”

Team Casa Hogar was the top winner this year. The 10 anglers and crew were fishing on behalf of the local non-profit organization that provides food, shelter and education to under-privileged Los Cabos boys. Angler Omar Castaneda scored the win after landing the biggest qualifying fish of the tournament, a 385-pound blue marlin. That fish took the overall team prize, tournament jackpot, top captain award (Capt. Ernie Cossio) and the Day Two $500 Daily Jackpot. The team is donating the $258,325 winnings to Casa Hogar.

In typical Black & Blue fashion, Sporty Game, entered across the board in all daily jackpot categories, waited until the final day to bring in the million-dollar fish. Carlos Cervontes whipped the 337-pound blue marlin in 18 minutes. That catch earned owner/captain Dan Lewis and the team a whooping payout of $1.682 million for second place in all team awards and the dailies. Lewis has been fishing the B&B since 2000. Sporty Game’s catch this year represents the 12th time a team has earned more than one million dollars in the tournament’s 34-year history.

Angler Dennis Bartos and Team Survivor are not going home empty-handed. Their blue marlin, tipping the scales at 328 pounds, earned a check for $42,187 for third place. Rounding out the top five, Baja Banditos pocketed $11,250 for a 320-pound blue, while Tepeyacos took fifth with a 304-pounder, good for $7,500.

In the tightly-contested Release Division, Mobius took top honors and the most money—$49,725—by releasing the first marlin based on time. Suzuka A, one of several teams from Japan, was second ($17,212) and Los Tapatios took third place and a check for $9,562. For the week, the 912 anglers from multiple countries caught 60 blue and six black marlin.

The Black & Blue slogan is “Come for fun, leave a millionaire.” After the 2014 event, however, adding: “And Make a Difference” is certainly an appropriate exclamation point.

2014 Los Cabos Bisbee´s Black and Blue Marlin Tournament 

Cabo San Lucas is one of the prime spots in the world where anglers can consistently catch the two largest species of marlin, blues and blacks. There are differences between the two, however, and that calls for different tactics.

Blacks tend to hang around reefs and structure with large concentrations of bait. So the underwater mounts off the tip of the Baja peninsula like Gordo Bank and Jaime Bank are prime places to bridle a live skipjack or yellowfin tuna and slowly bump the boat in and out of gear until a marlin spots it and decides to eat.

Blues, on the other hand, are open water predators that roam rips, currents and weed lines in search of food like dorado and squid. Boats targeting blue marlin often use lures so they can troll faster to cover more water to maximize the presentation.

So far, lures have had the edge in the 2014 Black & Blue. The qualifying fish—all blues—have been fooled by lures. Locally-made, Hi-5 Lures have been consistent Bisbee’s winners over the years.

2014 Los Cabos Billfish Tournament Day 1

Despite Hurricane Odile and limited air lift, the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament maintained its tradition and timing for 2014’s 16th-annual event. A festive kickoff party and captains meeting on the beautiful Playa Grande Resort & Grand Hotel’s beachside terrace got things going Tuesday evening.

The LCBT fishing began this morning as Rubén Reachi Lugo, Secretary of Tourism for Baja California Sur, shot the flare at 7:30 a.m., signaling the official start of Los Cabos’ fall tournament season. Fishing has been fantastic, so the teams were eager and excited to get underway. At press time, several blue and striped marlin were released, and one tuna was boated.

The first day of fishing in the 2014 Los Cabos Billfish Tournament proved productive, especially for Team Reel Gold.

Alaskan Jason Snyder, currently of Namibia, hooked up to a nice blue marlin at 12:27 p.m., and after a tough 30-minute battle the crew had the marlin on board. At the IGY Marina Cabo San Lucas weigh gantry, the fish weighed in at 365 pounds, winning levels 1-4 Daily Marlin Jackpots worth $2​​0,700 and giving Team Reel Gold the lead in the tournament.

Team Picante 45 earned Wednesday’s Daily Release Jackpot. Team captain and angler David Machado of Gulfport, Mississippi, caught a striped marlin and blue marlin, earning Picante 45 600 release points and the Daily $2,400 Release Jackpot. Team Picante 45 currently leads the Billfish Release Division, followed by Pocket Aces and Solmar.

In the Tuna/Wahoo/Dorado Jackpot, Team Minerva II angler Gary Anderson from Canada weighed a 25.4-pound dorado to take the $2,100 Daily Jackpot. Team Estrella Del Norte angler Gonzalo Gastillo of San Jose Del Cabo won the $2,100 Tuna Jackpot, besting a 180-pound yellowfin after a two-hour fight on 60-pound-test line. There were no wahoo weighed in, so that jackpot rolls to day two of fishing.

Gracias al Bisbee's Black and Blue Marlin Tournament, se ha logrado un importante crecimiento y proyección internacional, colocando a Los Cabos como un lugar notable para la práctica de la pesca deportiva. La cantidad de pescadores que vienen de todo el mundo ha aumentado considerablemente y cadenas televisivas apuntan sus cámaras hacia este paraíso durante el mes de octubre cada año.

Thanks to the significant growth and international expansion achieved by Bisbee's Black and Blue Marlin Tournament, Los Cabos is known as a remarkable place for sport fishing. The number of fishermen who come from around the world has markedly increased and television networks train their cameras on this paradise during the month of October every year.

Desde los años 60´s Bob Bisbee visitaba Cabo, amigos cercanos lo invitaban a viajar  en aviones privados, para 1973 al inaugurarse la carretera transpeninsular, inician sus recorridos en carro a lo largo de la península.

Bob Bisbee visited Cabo in the 60’s. Close friends brought him here in private jets. With the opening of the Trans-peninsular Highway in 1973, he started driving his car to Cabo.

Era el año de 1982, cuando platicaba con amigos apasionados del mundo de la pesca, entre ellos el pionero en la industria de la hotelería de Baja California Sur, Don Luis Coppola, es entonces cuando surge la idea de realizar pequeños torneos, y cambia la sede de su empresa de combustible y tienda de pesca, de New Port Beach, California,  a la punta más al sur de nuestro estado.

In 1982, Bob was chatting with friends who were also passionate about the world of fishing, including a pioneer in the hospitality industry in Baja California Sur, Don Luis Coppola. It was then the idea of small sport fishing tournaments became a reality. Bob sold his fuel company and fishing store and moved from Newport Beach, California, to the southern tip of our state.

Con su barco, su hijo Wayne de capitán y 5 embarcaciones se organiza, en el mes de mayo, el primer torneo de pesca deportiva de la región. Bob promovía los torneos, invitaba a pescadores y embarcaciones a participar. Para diciembre organizan otro torneo, éste ya con la participación de 27 embarcaciones. En mayo de 1983 otro y en diciembre otro, cada vez con más participantes, convirtiéndose en torneos divertidos y con premios que han llegado a alcanzar hasta millones de dólares.

The first fishing tournament in the region was organized in the month of May and included Bob’s boat, with his son Wayne as the captain, and just five other boats. Bob promoted the tournaments and invited fishermen and boats to participate. A tournament the following December already had the participation of 27 boats. By May and December of 1983, there were more and more participants. The tournaments were fun and prizes have now reached as high as a million.

Cuando se construye la marina de Cabo San Lucas, en 1987, empieza el arribo de una gran cantidad de botes, con ello los torneos fueron alcanzando gran fama en nuestros litorales y el extranjero.

The construction of the Cabo San Lucas marina in 1987 signaled the arrival of a large number of boats and the tournaments became famous along our coasts and abroad.

En 1990 decide retirarse, sin embargo el torneo continuó llevándose a cabo; en 1995 sus hijos Wayne y Patricia se encargan nuevamente del torneo.

Bob Bisbee decided to retire in 1990. However, the tour

nament continued and Bob’s children, Wayne and Patricia, have been in charge since 1995.

La fama que ha seguido al Black & Blue Marlin Bisbee's Tournament después de  30 años, se ha extendido, ahora se organizan dos torneos más, el Bisbee's East Cape Offshore Tournament en Buenavista y Los Cabos Offshore Tournament, conocido como “Little Bisbee's” con un ambiente más social para conocer a otros apasionados pescadores y compartir historias, éste se lleva a cabo unos días antes del tradicional torneo.  

The fame that has followed Bisbee's Black & Blue Marlin Tournament over 30 years has spread. Today, there are two tournaments, Bisbee's East Cape Offshore Tournament in Buenavista and the Los Cabos Offshore Tournament, known as "Little Bisbee's. The smaller tournament features a social environment for meeting other passionate fishermen and sharing stories. It takes place a few days before the traditional tournament.

Cuando me dijeron que la presente edición seria sobre el Mar de Cortés lo primero que se me ocurrió decirles fue: ¿y por dónde empezamos?, la tarea no es nada fácil. Hablar en un artículo sobre este tema se antoja imposible, porque habría que remontarse a sus orígenes geológicos y prehistóricos para poder empezar a entender la riqueza y la belleza de esta zona, y hasta ahí el tema es hablar de más de 130 millones de años, cuando en el periodo mesozoico se iniciara la separación de lo que hoy se conoce como la península de Baja California...

When I was told this issue would be about the Sea ofCortez, my first thought was, “Where do we start?” It is not an easy task. Covering this topic in a magazine article is almost imposible. To understand the richness and beauty of this área, we would have to go back to the geological and prehistoric origins. That would be more than 130 million years ago to the Mesozoic period when the separation of the peninsula and Baja California began.

Enmarcado por cuatro estados (Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora y Sinaloa) el Mar de Cortés es un sitio muy particular escogido por la naturaleza, y diseñado a través de los años… muchos años, para dar vida a una gran cantidad de especies autóctonas de flora y fauna, - en muchas ocasiones endémicas - y de escenarios naturales que no encuentran rival en todo el mundo.

Framed by four states (Baja California, Baja CaliforniaSur, Sonora and Sinaloa), the Sea of Cortez is one of nature’s very special sites. It was designed over the years, many years, to give life to a large number of native flora and fauna species - often endemic - and natural settings that are unrivalled worldwide.

Ya hemos hablado en otras ocasiones de las bellezas del estado de BCS, de su geografía y su gastronomía, del entretenimiento y de las muchas actividades que   se pueden realizar en tierra. Asimismo hemos comentado de las Islas, bahías y playas; pero en esta ocasión queremos invitarlo a un recorrido muy especial por el mar, que con características muy propias ha sido bautizado como el “acuario del mundo” por el oceanógrafo Jacques Cousteau.  Y no es casualidad que se haya ganado este calificativo. Es que por la temperatura de sus aguas, su clima, la cantidad de luz solar que recibe,  la vegetación marítima y la profundidad del océano, se crean condiciones perfectas para la procreación de infinidad de especies que a manera de ejemplo podemos mencionar como el Tiburón Cornuda, el Tiburón Toro y el Tiburón Leopardo, así como diferentes especies de rayas (manta rayas).  La variedad de especies de ornato es impresionante y de belleza única, como es el caso del Ídolo Moro, del cardenal y de la mariposa Guadaña, todos ellos habitantes de las diversas bahías a lo largo del Mar de Cortes, que totalizan casi 2500 kilómetros de costas.

We've talked in the past of the beauties of the state of BCS, its geography, gastronomy, entertainment and the many earthbound activities. We have also commented on the islands, bays and beaches. But this time, we want to invite you to a very special journey on the Sea of Cortez which, because of its unique characteristics, was dubbed the "world's aquarium" by the oceanographer Jacques Cousteau. It is no accident this body of water has earned this epithet. It is because the temperature of the water, the weather, the amount of sunlight it receives, the maritime vegetation and the depth of the ocean create the perfect conditions for the breeding of countless species. As examples, we can mention the Horn Shark, the Bull Shark and the Leopard Shark, as well as various species of rays (manta rays). The variety and beauty of ornamental species is impressive and unique, such as the Moorish Idol, the Cardinal and Scythe Butterflyfish, all habitants of the various bays along the Sea of Cortez. In total, there are almost 2500 miles of coastline.

El Mar de Cortés, también recibe los nombres de Golfo de California y Mar  Bermejo precisamente por los tonos con los que los atardeceres iluminan sus aguas. En él se encuentran una gran cantidad de pequeños islotes, hasta la isla más grande que en extensión supera los 1200 kilómetros cuadrados (Isla Tiburón). A muchas de ellas se puede llegar en embarcación y en algunas se permite la práctica de ciertas actividades recreativas, aunque a decir verdad, de todas estas, la simple exploración y la convivencia con la naturaleza son la mejor experiencia.  En muchas de ellas pareciera que el tiempo se detuvo, no hay sonido alguno como no sea el de las aves, reptiles y mamíferos, en su hábitat natural, sin que nada ni nadie lo perturbe.

 Debido a que grandes extensiones de tierra permanecen aun inhabitadas, el espectáculo que inicia al atardecer y se extiende hasta el amanecer es único. La claridad con la que se pueden observar las estrellas, los planetas, y el universo goza de un lugar muy especial en el medio científico, ya que desde hace más de 3 siglos investigadores y astrónomos de todo el mundo acuden a la península para hacer observaciones estelares.

The Sea of Cortez is also called the Gulf of California and Mar Bermejo (Vermillion Sea) precisely because of the colors at sunset that illuminate the waters. The sea contains a range of small islands with the largest having an area of 1200 square kilometers (Shark Island). Many of the islands can be reached by boat and some allow certain recreational activities. However, the mere exploration and coexistence with nature are the greatest experiences. On many of the islands, it seems that time has stopped. There is no sound, just that of birds, reptiles and mammals in their natural habitat, without anything or anyone to disturb them.

Since large extensions of land remain uninhabited, a unique show begins at sunset and extends to dawn. The clarity with which you can see the stars, the planets, and the universe has a special place in the scientific community. For more than three centuries, researchers and astronomers from around the world have flocked to the mainland to conduct stellar observations.

 Pero el Golfo de California no solo es mar y tierra, también es un refugio natural para aves que surcan los cielos de este territorio. En el abundan aves marinas como la garza azul, pelícanos, gaviotas, gansos de collar, patos, águilas y gavilanes, pero sobre todo abundan los zambullidores, pendientes de su comida diaria.

Por supuesto en el Mar de Cortes hay marinas para albergar todo tipo de embarcaciones y el recorrido en cualquiera que esta sea, es una experiencia única e irrepetible, aunque también hay una infinidad de bahías que invitan a fondearse y permanecer admirando el paisaje por horas y hasta días enteros.

But the Gulf of California is not only sea and land, it is also a natural refuge for the birds of this territory. The skies are home to abundant seabirds like blue heron, pelicans, gulls, brant, ducks, eagles and hawks, but mainly divers abound, looking for their daily meal.

Of course, there are marinas in the Sea of Cortes to accommodate all types of boats and any other unique form of marine travel. There is an infinite number of bays that invite you to anchor and stay for hours or days admiring the scenery.

 Con la misma complejidad que 130 millones de años ayudan a entender la formación del mar de cortés, los indicios en las pinturas rupestres que muestran la interrelación entre el hombre y la fauna de la región, incluidos peces y ballenas,  nos habla de la necesidad que tenía el hombre de interactuar con la vida marina.

Nuestra intención es invitarlo a ser testigo de las maravillas de Baja California Sur, disfrutarlas, conocer su historia y convivir con la naturaleza.  Pero en esta ocasión quisiéramos hacerlo de una manera especial para que nos acompañe en un recorrido mágico, desde la formación y conformación del mar de cortés, de su flora y fauna, de sus rinconcitos y de cada uno de esos espacios que estamos seguros le dejaran un recuerdo único.

Just as 130 million years of history help us to understand the formation of the Sea of Cortez, evidence in local cave paintings show the relationship between man and the wildlife of the region, including fish and whales. The paintings speak of man’s need to interact with marine life.

We invite you to witness the wonders of Baja California Sur, enjoy, know its history and commune with its nature. But we want to do it in a special way.
