The yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacaresmarketed as ahi, from its Hawaiian name ʻahi although the name ʻahi in Hawaiian also refers to the closely related bigeye tuna. The species name, albacares ("white meat") can lead to confusion. The tuna known as albacore in English, is a different species of tuna: Thunnus alalunga. However, yellowfin tuna is officially designated albacore in French, and is referred to as albacora by Portuguese fishermen. Also known as Allison tuna.

2014 Los Cabos Billfish Tournament Day 1

Despite Hurricane Odile and limited air lift, the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament maintained its tradition and timing for 2014’s 16th-annual event. A festive kickoff party and captains meeting on the beautiful Playa Grande Resort & Grand Hotel’s beachside terrace got things going Tuesday evening.

The LCBT fishing began this morning as Rubén Reachi Lugo, Secretary of Tourism for Baja California Sur, shot the flare at 7:30 a.m., signaling the official start of Los Cabos’ fall tournament season. Fishing has been fantastic, so the teams were eager and excited to get underway. At press time, several blue and striped marlin were released, and one tuna was boated.
