El Padre con
suerte / The lucky Father
y Alta California”.
Playing
the lottery may have been considered a vice by some religious, but Catholics
have heightened moderation in activities such as gambling and considered it
sinful if induced to excess or if such actions lead you into negligence on
other responsibilities. Half a century ago, this tolerance hoisted a magic wand
luck on Loreto in the form of an entrepreneur father Don Modesto Sanchez Mayon
who arrived in Loreto on late 40’s and spent the next years persuading the good
people of Loreto, not only have an interest in their spiritual life, but also
in preserve their historical Mission that was “Head and mother of all the South
and North Californian Missions”.
While
prayers were prayed, father Sánchez occasionally bought the Mexican National
Lottery tickets. When the father won the prize, he won the biggest one. In
their prayers he always promised that if ever won the Grand Prize, he have will
spend everything to rebuild and restore his Church and he kept his word and
built a new tower and made many repairs on the mission. In 1974, the writer
Norman Phillip wrote in a note: “A great restoration has been made recently;
the priest at that time was father Sánchez, a good friend of mine whom I admire
greatly.” He was who put workers to renew the sheet of gold in all the statues
and who brought the religious artists from all parts of Mexico to refresh the
paintings on the walls and ceilings. Stone repairs were made looking to
preserve the original beauty. It seemed that Father Sánchez had been paid for
all this works many millions of pesos that came out from his own pocket. Where
he bag so much money? Well, even if you don’t believe it, he bought several
lottery tickets and, Won! I can’t remember how many millions of pesos, but
many. And true to his word, all of those millions were spent in the following
years restoring his church built by the Spaniards”.
exactos.
No

The Phillips’ report gives the impression that the
purchase of lottery tickets occurred only once, but other reports suggest
that father Sánchez bought lottery tickets more than once. Phillip also
admits that he could not remember how many pesos, but other documents
reveal the amount of $500,000 pesos to be exact. No matter how much it was,
as it was enough to restore the first Californian mission.
