Just a 40-minute drive from La Paz and 2 1⁄2 hours from Cabo San Lucas, lies a small town that is a fantastic getaway for the adventurous Baja visitor. La Ventana is on the Sea of Cortez surrounded by gorgeous turquoise waters. On the horizon, there’s Isla Cerralvo inviting you to offshore excitement and to the west, a backdrop of cactus and desert plants that frame the town.

It’s not just the natural beauty that makes La Ventana so special. There’s a small town atmosphere here that makes visitors feel immediately welcome. The intimate hotels are a far cry from the mega resorts found elsewhere. Clean and cozy rooms with great food and happy owners on site are the norm here. The town offers many local restaurants serving everything from seafood to pizza to burgers to traditional Mexican fare at reasonable prices. The town has a very friendly atmosphere without sales pressure, and the locals are laid back and welcoming.

If that wasn’t enough, La Ventana is a water sports paradise. Lets start with fishing. It’s incredible here April to November. There’s Dorado, Tuna, Wahoo, Marlin, Amberjack, Pargo, Roosterfish, and Cabrilla. The same waters provide world-class spear fishing opportunities and are home to no less than six world records. Scuba diving and snorkeling are also fantastic around Cerralvo Island with sea lion colonies, shipwrecks, underwater cliffs and pinnacles. The best visibility is April – November. Kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) are also incredibly popular here in the summer months and mornings during the winter season. Groups of friends can be seen paddling along the coast stopping afterwards at favorite spots for coffee or breakfast. SUP boards are readily available for rent and lessons for those new to the sport easily arranged.

As fun as summer is, the winter winds bring the most fame to La Ventana. From November to April, northwest winds funnel through the window between Punta Gorda and Cerralvo Island. They are incredibly consistent and provide the perfect conditions for kiteboarding and windsurfing. The skies of La Ventana Bay are filled with colorful kites and sails as visitors ride the wind and waves every afternoon. For those who want to learn, professional instructors and schools offer lessons for all skill levels. Gear is available at many shops and hotels. The shape of La Ventana Bay provides a safe beach for beginners to ride downwind then get a ride back upwind to start again.
Every January, for the past six years, La Ventana has hosted the La Ventana Classic – a charity event that raises money for local schools and the community. This popular event includes all the favorite winter sports.

San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur, was founded in 1730. Today, it is the capital of the municipality of Los Cabos. In recent years, San Jose has become a center of cultural and artistic importance in this tourism area.

The streets of Alvaro Obregon and Ignacio Zaragoza are the axis of the San Jose historic center. The streets converge in the Jardín Mijares and the square of the same name located next to another smaller esplanade, opposite City Hall. Bordering this area and down Obregon Street, are galleries, craft shops, lounges and restaurants.

Work from Enrique Bascón Gallery
Artists of international and national fame have come to this picturesque town in recent years. Their creativity has flourished in the sunshine and agreeable atmosphere. Visitors are pleasantly surprised by the galleries that surround the old part of town. Not only by the art, but everything that surrounds the Baja California Sur community.

The work consistently reflects how the artists live, feel and experience every day life in Los Cabos. On a recent visit, I enjoyed sculptures and paintings of pelicans, the famous Arch, beach landscapes, off-road vehicles, colors, forms, faces, pendants, necklaces, bracelets ... in short a little of everything.

No wonder galleries on Obregon and surrounding streets open their doors every Thursday. The owners invite passersby to enjoy a glass of red or white wine accompanied by delicious hors d’oeuvres while viewing the works of renowned painters, sculptors, jewelry designers and photographers.

No matter when you go, a walk through the historic center of San Jose del Cabo is a memorable experience. But Thursdays are special.  If you can, arrive at 5:00 pm. You can enjoy the galleries and the extraordinary international cuisine at one of the man great restaurants with your family and friends. You’ll find an atmosphere of warm hospitality that has always characterized the peaceful and picturesque village of Baja California Sur.
